Aims

Find my Charity is a new organisation based in Camberwell and currently operating around Southwark.

They aim to transform health and social care by empowering individuals to use their community for support.

Why

Health literacy is poor in the UK with published health information too complex for many. Historically, state-funded health and social care services have been the the gatekeeper to people's health and wellbeing, but now, after years of austerity, statutory services (including the NHS) are time- and resource-poor and struggling to keep up with demand. Added to this, many people seek medical attention for stress and anxiety often associated with food poverty or benefit issues. Unfortunately, clinicians are not able to solve those kind of issues effectively and sustainably. Luckily, resources to address these concerns already exist in the community, but, many who need these services do not know where to look.

This is where social prescribing comes in and we are here to facilitate and grow the practice of using communities to help people.

How

We want to build community capacity by:

  • promoting activities to the public via events and social media (@findmycharity on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram)
  • building lines of communication between community providers
  • developing a comprehensive, open-access directory of providers for London findmycharity.org

Building community capacity is important groundwork to set prior to social prescribing roll-out to prepare the community for the increased demand that will result from it and to start a culture shift where people look to their communities for certain types of support.
